Book Chapter in Civility Unbound
I’m pleased to announce that I have a chapter in a new volume called Civility Unbound: Contesting a Democratic Value.

The title and abstract for my chapter reads:
Civility or Control? Who is Part of the Community?
The idea of civility is predicated on a well-structured society that has norms that should benefit everyone. This essay questions whether such a society exists in the United States and whether what we call “civility” is simply a euphemism for “control.” Starting from a premised of stratified and conditional citizenship in this country, the essay points out how gender and race continue to be markers for limited belonging to the national idea of community.
